The Riyadh Metro Project is the Mass Transit Rail System currently being constructed in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. It is a significant, fast track project consisting of 6 rail lines, 176km of track, 85 stations and a budget of around $22.5 billion. 35km of track in central Riyadh runs under ground and a total of 7 tunnel boring machines are carving out the massive 10 metre diameter tunnels deep beneath the city (by comparison, the Crossrail tunnels are “only” 6.2M in diameter). Work started on site in 2014 and the first trains are due to run in 2019.
Blakley Electrics involvement with the project has been the design and manufacture of specialist tunnel power & lighting equipment, to be used during the construction phase. We have supplied a range of high current, free standing Automatic Mains Failure Panels (up to 2000A rating), Mains Distribution Assemblies, Tunnel Distribution Assemblies, Tunnel Transformers, Pump Supply Panels and Plug-in 110V tunnel lighting, all meeting the high safety standards of BS6164.
The equipment draws on many years experience of designing and manufacturing heavy duty distribution equipment for the UK Civil Engineering and Tunnelling sectors, including involvement on projects such as the Channel Tunnel, Jubilee Line Extension, Channel Tunnel Rail Link, Lee Tunnels and Crossrail. In addition, the assemblies for Riyadh also have to operate in an ambient temperature of 50°C, which isn’t usually a requirement in the UK!
If you would like further information on our specialist range of heavy duty Low Voltage and Reduced Low Voltage (110V) products for Tunnel and Civil Engineering projects, please contact the Blakley Projects Team who will be pleased to be of assistance.
